Samhain, spoken in the old Gaelic tongue as Samhuinn, or SOW-IN, meaning “summer’s end,” arrives like a breath held between worlds. It is the hinge of the year, the sacred pause between the last fruits of harvest and the long inward silence of winter. As the sun lowers and the shadows stretch, the Earth turns in season and spirit. This ancient festival falls at the midpoint between the Autumn Equinox and the Winter Solstice, and with it comes the soft unravelling of the veil, the invisible boundary between the living and the dead, between the seen and the unseen.

During this time, the air thickens with spirits, and the wind speaks in their whispers.  Those attuned to the animistic nature around them can feel the shift, the hush, the reverence, and the sacredness of it all settling gently into the marrow. There is comfort in it, this thinning of the veil, for it reminds us that we are never alone, and that we too shift with the seasons as nature, not separate from it.

The beloved dead walk beside us. The hands that shaped ours, the hearts that once beat alongside our own, the wisdom keepers, the storytellers, and the healers who came before us all gather, quietly, at the edges of the firelight, waiting to be remembered, waiting to be welcomed. In this sacred season we prepare a sacred space for them.

Set a place at your hearth for those who no longer walk this world, but whose spirit still lingers in love. Light the candle as a beacon, a heart lantern to guide them home to a place of remembrance and love.

The purpose of this candle is to guide and protect, calling in only familiar spirits and protecting against the unfamiliar and unsafe. Each plant was chosen for its spirit, not just its scent. Although its scent is very beautiful and potent, herbal and wise. Each herb opens the doorway to the ancestors. They are intentionally left in the candle as a visible offering to the Beloved Dead. Only organic essential oils and herbs are worked with in this candle, no synthetic oils or plants are used, just pure plant born nature based magic is added to gather in your beloveds.

Thyme calls back memories. Rosemary remembrance. Cinnamon protection and wisdom, wormwood thins the veil, and frankincense lifts the spirit into ritual. Orange brings brightness to the path, tobacco carries deep reverence, and anise sharpens our sight between worlds. Resting within the wax is black tourmaline, the stone of grounding and protection, to keep your space clear and protected.

And so we light the candle and speak to those we once knew, and to those who gave us the life within us today.
